Teenagers from Ashby Ivanhoe FC spent this lockdown raising money for Mental Health charity Mind.
The management team at Ashby Ivanhoe Under 18s who play in the Leicestershire Floodlit Youth League were looking for ways for the players to stay fit during this lockdown before football would be allowed to restart in March.
They settled on running 28 miles in the 28 days of February, and players chose charity was Mind. They had the option to run a mile a day, or 7 miles over the course of each week- with 17 players completing the target, raising £170.
Manager Conrad Carrolan expressed that "I am incredibly proud of the lads for deciding to take part in this challenge. The lads were showing a maturity, thinking of others who are struggling or not as fortunate as themselves. They've thoroughly enjoyed it and laughed along the way, which has also boosted morale in the squad. They're all working really hard in terms of getting ready for the restart"
Coaches James Summers & Mo Aswat said, “We knew people were struggling in this lockdown more than any other so far and the players wanted to help in any way they could. Some players finished within the first week, and the last player finished at 9pm on Sunday the 28th with some encouraging to get over the line!
A lot of the players have jobs or are studying for A Levels, so for them to find the time to fit in this on top of that is something for them all to be proud of.”
After being given the green light from the government for football to resume, the team are waiting for news of if and when they can complete the season.
The club chairman, Stuart Bonser, added, “The players should be really proud of their individual and collective achievement and for the monies raised in supporting such an important charity”.
